Unfortunately, the craze for vintage watches also attracts counterfeits. Here are the 6 key steps to recognizing an authentic vintage watch:

1. Serial number & Reference

Every brand-name watch has a unique serial number. This number verifies the year of production and the authenticity of the model.

2. Mechanical or automatic movement

Movements must be consistent with the era of the model. A caliber that's too modern in a watch that's supposed to date back to the 60s = alert.

3. Finishing details

Counterfeits often contain errors such as inaccurate typography, misaligned needles and crude engravings.

4. Original or restored dial?

A 100% original dial has a natural patina. Too new = may be a restoration, or even a copy.

5. Case, bracelet and crown

Check the signature on the crown, the logos on the buckle, and the consistent wear of the case.

6. Certification or invoice of origin

A certificate of authenticity, invoice or service history increases the confidence and value of the watch.
